Speaker has to change as there is no longer a brute majority on one side: Farooq

National Conference (NC) President and former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir Farooq Abdullah on Thursday said that democracy has to survive for that the Speaker of Parliament Om Birla has to change.

“It is no longer brute majority on the one side”, Farooq told the media a video of which was shared on the official page of National Conference on X. “I hope it will change. Democracy has to survive for that the speaker of Parliament has to change. It is a new thing.”

Abdullah said this a day after National Conference Member Parliament Aga Ruhullah Mehdi had a fiery faceoff with Speaker Om Birla in the Lok Sabha over Article 370 and the ‘Muslim terrorist’ tag to a former MP.

“I am glad. All the opposition stands by the constitution and I hope they will strengthen the constitution rather than allowing the constitution to disappear,” he said,

“Now there is an opposition, a strong opposition and young opposition that wants to raise people’s problems in the parliament,” he added.

“I hope the Speaker will allow those problems to be brought before the people, otherwise this parliament has no meaning at all”, the NC leader said.
