Srinagar: The families affected by fire in Chattabal area of the city last month, staged a demonstration here on Thursday seeking financial help from the state government to rebuild their damaged houses.

Reports reaching GNS said that the several male members of the affected families this afternoon converged at Press Enclave here and staged a demonstration.

Chanting “We want justice,” the protesters were demanding financial aid from the state government to rebuild the houses damaged by fire on October 26.

Ghulam Hassan Sheikh, a protester said that 13 houses suffered extensive damage to the fire. A day after the fire, he said Patwari visited the affected families and offered Rs 5000 as compensation.

“With those Rs 5000, we were able to feed our families. However, we have no resources to rebuild our houses,” Sheikh told GNS.

He said that authorities were making the affected families to run from pillar to post to seek some financial assistance for rebuilding the houses.

“We have small children. Our neighbour, who is building a marriage hall, gave us shelter. Our hardships are increasing with every passing day,” Sheikh said.

“No one is coming to our rescue. Officials only come and take our details assuring us of all possible help. But nothing concrete is being done,” he added.

Abdul Majid Sheikh, another protester said that the small children were falling sick due to improper hygiene and prevailing weather conditions.

He urged the state government to expedite the case of the fire victims so that they are able to move on with their lives. (GNS)
