National Conference President Farooq Abdullah on Wednesday alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is doing politics on religion to save his chair and asserted that it will not last as people have for ages lived in this country as one despite their religious background.

Accosting PM Modi and BJP’s “Ram Bhakti”, Abdullah proclaimed that Lord Ram is not a Hindu “property” for he belongs to all and his essence has been felt everywhere in this country by all irrespective of their religion.

“Modi is trying to divide the nation for his chair unfortunately,” Abdullah told media persons in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district on Wednesday.

When told that Modi has already denied this allegation, the NC chief said: “Modi is trying to divide the nation for his chair unfortunately…chair doesn’t stay, the nation survives? What the PM is saying is going to destroy..”

“We have to live together whether we are Hindus, Mulsims, Sikhs or any other to save the nation for the better future of our children,” the senior leader said.

Replying to a question, he said: “I am not playing the religious card. What we are and what we should do — our religion teaches good things. No religion is bad; it is the people who are bad.”

Farooq asked “what Prime Minister Modi is doing .. Does he not go to Ram Temple and stay there? What is he trying to show? Is he not creating disturbance, hatred? Is Ram only for Hindus?. Ram is not only for Hindus. Ram is visually around and he belongs to all. He wants to make (Ram) only their’s (Hindus) and that is not true”.

Asked that Peoples Democratic Party President Mehbooba Mufti alleged that the National Conference provoked her to contest the parliamentary elections, Farooq said, “Does Farooq Abdullah have such a power to provoke her?”

“We were together in Mumbai and I told her we will talk. But she said we will talk in Kashmir. She was willing to contest the elections but she forgot her promise,” Farooq added.
