Srinagar: Kashmir issue, neither any territorial conflict nor a border dispute between two countries, but a humanitarian issue concurring the existence and future of more than 15 million people of Jammu and Kashmir.
This was stated by Hurriyat Conference chairman (G), Syed Ali Geelani while addressing a seminar titled “UN report on Violation of Human Rights in Indian Occupied Kashmir: Demographic Changes and Societal implications” in Islamabad Pakistan on 8 December 2018.
I would like to convey my feelings in Islamic way of greetings “Asalam-u-Alikum, wa Rehmatuulahi Wabarakathu.
Dear Gentleman! I am sure you all are familiar with the fact that Jammu and Kashmir is a long pending issue waiting for the final dispensation in accordance with the agreed UN resolutions. People of this unfortunate land are yearning for their right to self-determination.
From the day Indian troops landed in Srinagar in October 1947, after the British withdrew from Indian sub-continent giving birth to two states, Muslim majority state of Pakistan and the Hindu majority state of India.
Jammu and Kashmir being a Muslim majority region was forcibly annexed by Indian troops against the principles of partition, against the wishes and aspirations of majority and against the natural justice.
India itself continued forcibly through its military might two erstwhile states of Hyderabad and Junagarh, arguing that principles of partition are that rulers, can’t decide on his own the fate of their population, but same argument was denied in case of Jammu and Kashmir.
Since then the people of Jammu and Kashmir have been relentlessly struggling to free themselves from the Indian military grip using all possible means.
In response to our struggle for freedom, India has deployed about a million armed forces to crush and control a small population of 15 million, turning it into a huge prison with densiest military concentration anywhere in the world as reported by many International organizations including European Union.
Despite the fact that there are countless resolutions passed by UN Security Council in fovour of conducting a plebiscite.
So far the occupation forces have killed more than a lakh people in Kashmir region and around 5 lakh in Jammu region, enforced disappearances of about 10 thousand, maimed, imprisoned and tortured lakhs, especially young people, used rape and molestation of women folk as a war weapon to humiliate and demoralize the culturally and morality sensitive population.
Hundreds of unmasked graves identified and discussed by local and international media while Indian media and establishment has completely ignored it. In these graves most probably these disappeared persons have been buried, but India never heeds to the demands and requests of the families of these persons.
Residential houses are bulldozed and raised to ground by dynamite, live orchards are ruthlessly cut to take the revenge from the families of pro-freedom people, peaceful protests and funeral procession are fired upon with lethal weaponry.
State of Jammu and Kashmir is being used as a testing lab for newly introduced weaponry of government forces, be it the use of pallet guns, PAVA Shells, chemical weapons, anti tank missiles or latest announcement of Indian Army chief to use drone attacks, provided international community prefers to keep mum on the collateral damage.
Frequent night raids in search of youth, throttling the voice of Kashmiries by restoring to media black-out, banning and disruption of Internet and paralyzing the mobile services are a new norm in our land. Our just struggle is being branded and labeled as terrorism, sponsored by the neighboring country and a malicious and defaming propaganda is launched by the state run media houses.
Thousands of our people irrespective of their age and gender are languishing in jails in and outside the state for years together without any legal proceedings.
Even the supreme court of India has categorically laid emphasis on the guidelines for prisoners that they be kept in prisons near their residences, but our inhuman oppressor never pays any heed to its own judicial commandments.
Government of India and its intelligence agencies recently have revived the dreaded and lethal government sponsored gunmen to eliminate the pro-freedom people under the cover of “un-identified Gunmen”.
Those refusing their dictates and resisting their lusty advances are being targeted in broad-day-light, sending shock waves to the whole resistance camp. The latest victims of this carnage are our close associates and dedicated workers.
This is just a glimpse of the sad and gloomy situation prevailing in this piece of land, where common people in general and pro-freedom in particular curse the day when Indian tropes in our soil snatching every comfort, every movement of peace, every smile from our faces and every reason to cherish.
Bilateral talks and lip service of so-called negotiations has failed to yield anything positive for the last 7 decades and let me clear it to everybody here and through you to the while world including the brute oppressor that Kashmir issue is not a territorial problem or a border dispute between two countries, but a humanitarian issue concerning the future of millions of people, threatened by an impending disaster at the hands of forced occupation by Indian state, which has reached its crescendo owing to the recent escalation of repression by the state apparatus.
This is small and brief historical background of the birth of tragedy the world know as Kashmir issue.
Respected participants global situation is also not peaceful. Escalation of militarypolitical confrontation, humanitarian tragedies and environment disasters, growing intolerance and mistrust between neighboring countries, water challenges, cyber threats, new arms race, misunderstandings and miscalculations in crisis situations have all ingredients and potential to push for a nuclear and military collusion.
Middle East crisis, humanitarian catastrophic situation faced by Rohingya Muslims are at the verge of a fresh humanitarian disaster. In India, majortarian is being enforced using state apparatus and minorities especially Muslims are harassed, killed and threatened on one or the other pretext.
Cow vigilantes, Mandhir euphoria and uniform civil code is nothing but to target a particular community.
Mob lynching has become day to day affair and at the behest of establishment, religious fanatics are free to harm anybody on mere suspicion- growing incidents of mob lynching has given Indian the name of lynchistan.
In this grim and gloomy atmosphere, world especially South Asia cannot afford addition of yet another nuclear collusion.
As earlier said that we only want international and global commitments to be fulfilled and look forward to the nations and dignitaries at the global spectrum to come forward and help to defuse this manmade disaster in waiting.
Respected friends! In Jammu and Kashmir 71 long years of continuous and torturous path of our struggle has been very testing. Our peaceful and non violent cries have never been hououred or respected. Gross human rights violations have hardly been reported the way it deserved and almost neglected.
Recently first ever report on Human rights violation by the office of UN high commissioner for Human Rights is welcome step and we as a nation are highly obliged to see the UN finally woke up and opened its eyes after a long period to see the victimized and crushed people of Kashmir.
Such courageous initiatives need to be capitalized and more pressure is needed for India to accept the demand of UN to send its fact finding mission to Indian Occupied Kashmir. If a protective and persistent approach is adopted I am sure India has no escape then to succumb to the International pressure.
However India tried its best to discredit the report by character assassination and maligning the image and stature of UN Human Rights Commission Chief, but where ashamed when UN Secretary General authenticated and owned this report.
We need to ensure that this report is tabled in both General Assembly and Security Council, otherwise we will be facing the situation and 1990’s, when Pakistan got a resolution on Kashmir which couldn’t be passed because of Indian lobbying and diplomatic maneuvering.
I once again thank you all to show patience to listen to my feelings. I hope and pray that sincere efforts of the organizers get a warm and encouraging response from its member nations to allow the humanity especially those trapped in conflict zones to live a dignified and peaceful life which is their birth right.
