Srinagar: Chairman All Parties Hurriyat Conference (G) Syed Ali Geelani has appealed United Nations Human Rights Commission (UNHRC) to take cognizance of the plight of Kashmiri prisoners lodged in District Jail Udhampur.

In a statement issued to GNS, Geelani condemned the “harsh and inhuman attitude” of jail authorities towards the inmates and who he alleged are being subjected to 3rd degree methods of torture.

“Parents and relatives of the inmates are narrating woeful stories of physical torture and other oppressive methods of intimidation,” APHC (G) chairman said and urged Amnesty International and International Red Cross to probe the plight of prisoners and detainees lodged in District Jail Udhampur.

Geelani also urged the UN Secretary General to help resolve Kashmir dispute in accordance with the aspirations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.

Meanwhile, Geelani paid rich tributes to the militants killed in encounters at Gurez and Rafiabad areas of north Kashmir.

“It is the stubbornness of India and its arrogance of military might which serves as a deterrent and main obstacle in peaceful resolution of Kashmir issue,” Geelani said.

He said the “sacred sacrifices” given by youth are “highly valuable”. “The nation is indebted to such sacrifices and we take pledge to carry our legitimate movement for right to self-determination to its logical conclusion,” he said.

Meanwhile, APHC (G) spokesperson has rejected the views put forward by National Conference working president Omar Abdullah that “the protests and the two-day shutdown in Kashmir in defence of Article 35A was a ‘tacit acceptance’ that the state’s future lies within the Constitution”

He termed Omar’s statement as “yet another cruel joke with the history of Kashmir stained by his (Omar’s) predecessors since 1947”.

“Article 370 and 35-A etc have remained tools of exploitation in the hands of all the pro-India political parties who have been instrumental in abrogating these constitutional barriers to change the state subject laws and demography of the state,” he said.

The APHC (G) spokesperson has appealed to the “freedom loving people to remain vigilant against the ill-designed double speak of all the pro-India political parties for whom the recent civil curfew and strong protest has served as an eye-opener”.

He said National Conference played a key role in damaging the Muslim majority character of the state and abrogating the state subject law.

The spokesperson sought immediate intervention of United Nations Secretary General in stopping the “overt and covert efforts by India to change the demography of Jammu and Kashmir”. (GNS) Appeals Appeals
