Traffic Mayhem Returns With The Re-Opening Of Schools

Traffic chaos across summer capital Srinagar returned with the re-opening of schools across Jammu and Kashmir after three months of winter break.

Despite Traffic department’s advisory a day ahead of re-opening of schools, proved to be disaster.

Traffic department on Monday had issued an advisory for school transport to regulate the traffic mechanism in the city.

Traffic jams in major crossings and junctions were reported in some parts of the city on Tuesday, on the first day of schools in the valley.

Eyewitness said that in morning and evening hours there were traffic jams at major crossings in the city after the schools were opened after winter break which includes Pantha Chowk, Batamaloo, Rambagh, Bemina, Parimpora etc.

A group of students stranded in traffic jams expressed anguish over the rising traffic jams in the city. They said, they reach to home in late hours, which affects our education. It takes hours to refresh back from headache. They also complained that there was no First Aid available I'm the school buses. Whereas according to the advisory the owner of the bus has to keep First Aid available all the time.

“The advisory issued by Traffic department had also mentioned that all drivers especially those of school buses should be dressed in a distinctive uniform. While as most the drivers in and around the city floated the advisory and were seen in civil dresses,” said a passenger.

SSP Traffic, Masood-U-Zaman said, the response of the advisory issued was “positive” throughout the day despite traffic jams.  

“The cause of the traffic jams is credited to the violations and increasing traffic movement every day,” he said. “The advisory issued by the department would take some time to implement. But overall there was no overloading in school buses.”

He said that they also checked the documents and the condition of the vehicles was almost good.

Meanwhile Traffic jams were also reported from Rambagh-Badshanagar route. The cause of the traffic jam was credited to the construction work going on in the flyover according to passengers.

Sources said, after the construction work was started on the flyover, it has halted traffic movement especially during morning and evening. The passengers said we have to take alternative routes to reach our destinations. Vehicles on this route have to wait for hours near Rambagh Bridge where construction is under way.(Agencies)
