Sgr-Jmu Highway to Open After Weather Improves, says IG Traffic

Srinagar:The authorities Sunday restricted movement of vehicular traffic on Srinagar-Jammu due to shooting stones and closed Sonamarg-Ladakh highways due to the deteriorating weather in the region. Traffic was also suspended on Mughal road in Shopian district.

Kashmir valley has seen intermittent, moderate rainfall in plains and heavy snowfall in hilly areas. In-charge Inspector General of Police Traffic, J&K, Viplav Kumar told KNS vehicular movement on Jammu-Srinagar highway was restricted due to shooting stones near Ramsoo. “Only non-commercial vehicles are allowed from Banihal to Ramsoo stretch. No commercial, passenger vehicle either from Jammu to Srinagar or from Srinagar to Jammu is being allowed,” Kumar said.

Kumar said that movement of all types of goods carriers has also been suspended from Udhampur towards Srinagar and Qazigund

Meanwhile, traffic was also completely closed on Sonamarg-Ladakh highway due to heavy snowfall. “Two feet snow on the highway from last evening forced its closure,” he said. Due to the bad weather, hundreds of vehicles remained suspended on the highways, posing difficulties to hundreds of passengers, and vehicle drivers. “Subject to improvement in weather, the highway would be thrown open for vehicular traffic tomorrow,” the official said. The traffic department also suspended vehicular movement on Mughal Road following heavy snowfall in Peer Ki Gali stretch.

“Following fresh snowfall from Chatta Pani to Peer Ki Gali in Poonch jurisdiction, vehicular movement has been suspended temporarily and snow clearance work is on,” the traffic official said. (KNS)
