Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Saturday said it is “highly concerned” about civilian killings in Handwara and Nutnussa and makes a “common cause with the bereaved people”.

She met the union Defence Minister in the wake of the incident and convened an emergency meeting of security top brass in Srinagar ensuring time bound inquiry and a fool-proof mechanism to guarantee protection of life and property while maintaining law and order,” ruling coalition partner, PDP, said in a party statement this evening.

“It was in consequence of the government action that Army top brass including General Hooda visited Handwara and expressed regrets on the incident,” the statement claimed.

“PDP is committed to peace and civil rights and will continue to strive for upholding human rights and dignity. Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti holds a promise to provide a secure environment with a responsive and accountable security network. The security agencies will have to come-up to the normal operational standards and lapses causing civilian inconvenience will have to be minimized,” the statement added.(Agencies)
