Protests Rock Kupwara School Over Sexual Harassment

sexual harrasment1Kupwara: Locals and students of Government Girls Higher Secondary School Sogam staged massive protest in the school premises on Wednesday evening demanding action against a teacher for sexually harassing school girls.

The protesters said that some teachers of the school have been allegedly harassing female students of the school since 2010. Even though the matter was brought into the notice of the school administration many at times but no action was taken,” the protesters said. 

 They added that a teacher identified as Shabir Ahmad Wani allegedly hurled lewd remarks towards a female student and attempted to make sexual advances in the school.

Aghast over the inaction of administration students led by their parents and locals held a daylong protest outside the school here demanding strict action against the erring teacher. They also tried to damage the school property.

The protesters alleged that the unfortunate behaviour of the teachers even forced many girls to give up studies and stay back home. 

However, the Principal of College, Ghulam Ahmad admitted that they received the complaint in this regard and forwarded it to the concerned police station for investigation.

 “The students complained the matter to school administration which has accordingly forwarded to local police for investigations. Initially we put the teacher under suspension till the report comes up,” said Ghulam Ahmad.

The police have also confirmed that they received the complaint of sexual harassment from the school authorities and are probing it.

"We have received a complaint of harassment and initial investigations are on. Several students and their parents had been protesting against the alleged misbehaviour which is not acceptable," Sub Division Police Officer (SDPO) Lolab, Hilal Ahmad told The Legitimate.
