Baramulla: In a bid to give flip to stalled sports activities in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district and boost overall sports, a sports and athletics festival kicked off at Showket Ali Stadium of Degree College ground in Baramulla on Thursday.
Amid biting chill and blistering sports fervor, the sports festival-organized by Jammu and Kashmir Police in collaboration with Jammu and Kashmir Sports Council and Nehru Yuva Kendra- was inaugurated by Inspector General of Police Kashmir Javaid Mujtaba Gillani.
While addressing the enthusiastic gathering of sports lovers, athletes, students, prominent citizens, officials of the police, Army and Paramilitary CRPF and district administration, IGP Gillani hailed role of police for organizing such mega sports festivals in Baramulla thereby inculcating sports culture among the youth.
“Such festivals are aimed at utilizing the energy of youth towards constructive activities like sports and public welfare because such sports activities lay a strong foundation for a peaceful atmosphere and cement relationship between police and public,” added Gillani.
He further said that sports were the right means of channelizing the energy of the youth for the peace and nation building. He informed that such events being organized in length and breadth of the valley will continue to be held to provide the platform to youth to hone their sports talent.
While welcoming the guests, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Baramulla Mir Imtiyaz Hussain said, “Police feel elated and are proud to organize this sports festival. Sports is indispensible part of life and helps an individual to refrain from social evils.”
Adding he said that organizing such programs not only encourage the participation of the youth but also help in boosting the sports in the valley.
While expressing gratitude to all teams, agencies and intuitions working in collaboration with police in organizing the sports festival, SSP said, “I express my thanks to all people who in whatever manner support us in conducting this festival.”
“This type of events in which sports is major part not only makes the person physically agile and alert but also help in mental growth owing to the inculcation of brotherhood and sense of harmony and cooperation,” he added.
Earlier, in the Inaugural Kabadi match played between Gulshan Kabadi Club Trumbgund and Sultania Club Tujjarsharief later defeated former after tough contest. The match was won by Sultania Club.
Among others DC Baramulla Nasir Naqash, DIG North Kashmir, Uttam Chand, Brig.Yogesh Choudhary and many prominent citizens and other eminent dignitaries were also present on the occasion
Hundreds of young sportspersons and athletes hailing from all across the district are participating in the sports meet. Besides athletics competitions in games like Hockey, Volley Ball, Handball, Kabbadi, Table Tennis, Khokho, Tug of War and other games will be part of the sports festival. A colorful cultural program was presented by school children and other cultural tropes on the occasion.
