Life in Srinagar and most parts of the Valley started limping back to normalcy after remaining crippled for five days due to strikes and protests over civilian killings, but curfew-like restrictions continued in Handwara and Kupwara towns in border district.

Normal activities resumed today in Srinagar and other parts of the Valley after authorities lifted curfew-like restriction and withdrew additional police and paramilitary personnel from the streets.

Shopkeepers opened their shops and public transport was back on roads as no separatist group has called for a strike or protest for the day.

However, the curfew-like restrictions continued in Handwara and Kupwara today for the fifth day to maintain law and order and prevent youth from taking to roads and staging anti-government demonstrations.

The restrictions were imposed in Handwara, Kupwara, parts of Srinagar and other parts of the Valley after three persons including a 60-year-old woman were killed in army firing in Handwara on April 12 after alleged molestation of a school girl by an army man.

Two more youth were killed in tear gas shelling and firing by security men at Dragmulla and Natnusa, Kupwara triggering massive protests across the Valley.

A police official said no restrictions were imposed in Srinagar today as there were no major protests yesterday and no fresh shutdown or protest call was given by separatists.

He said the day passed off peacefully with no untoward incident reported from anywhere in the valley.(Agencies)
