Law Deptt to Hire PPs With 7 Years Work Experience
All new engagements as per rule: Law Minister
Srinagar: After facing public ire over appointment of law officers for different departments, the Law department has decided to hire public prosecutors with an experience of seven years.
The decision has been taken after the recommendations by a four member committee which was headed by Advocate General Jahangir Iqbal Ganai, and had Additional Advocate General, Director Prosecution and Additional Secretary Law as its members.
“The committee has submitted its report and has recommended that the public prosecutors which will be hired to plead criminal cases for the government should have seven years of practice as lawyers in court,” Law Secretary Mohammad Ashraf Mir told KNS.
Around 42 PPs are recruited by the government to plead criminal cases in the courts.
State’s Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Syed Basharat Bukhari told KNS that the department has framed rules recently for engaging PPs.
“Earlier, Law department had no rules and regulations to engage PPs. It was a random engagement. But from now onwards, we will engage PPs as per rules which the department has framed recently. We are also in the process of framing rules for engaging additional advocate generals, deputy advocate generals, government advocates and standing counsels for different departments,” Bukhari said.
Earlier this year, the government had appointed 22 persons as law officers among whom 12 of them, including advocate generals, deputy advocate generals and law officers were engaged on different considerations.
Bukhari said that the law department can engage any lawyer “whom it trusts.”
“The law department reserves the right to engage counsels whom it trusts because everybody who fights cases in the court of law, be it private or government, reserves the right to engage lawyer whom he trusts. It can be a relative or any person. It is not bad if he is a relative because it is a matter of trust,” the minister said. (KNS)
