Kupwara Killings: In 5 Days, 27 Civilians, 202 Security Men Injured: IGP

Twenty eight civilians and 202 security forces personnel were injured in the last five days during clashes between youth and security forces in Kupwara district, police said.

Xuhaib MaqboolInspector General of Police Syed Javaid Gilani said that 28 civilians were injured, out of which five succumbed to their injuries.

The police chief was assessing the situation in the district that has been tense this week.

Two civilians were injured in Trehgam on Saturday during clashes. They have been identified as Yawar Rashid (18), Gowhar Majid (18), both residents of Trehgam, Kupwara. The youth were injured due to pellets and have been admitted in SHMS hospital here.

“16 of the injured who were admitted to the hospitals were discharged after treatment. Six of the injured are recuperating in the hospitals,” the IGP told media in SP office Kupwara.

Gilani said that 202 security forces were injured, including three SPs, and two DSPs.

The police chief said that 30 vehicles of the police and CRPF also received minor damages during the clashes and three police posts in Langate, Drugmulla and Handwara were also damaged.

Kupwara district has been tense after April 12 following the allegations of molestation of a school girl by an army man, and in subsequent protests five civilians were killed.

Meanwhile, police in a statement said that the situation remained largely peaceful across Kashmir Valley today although some stray stone pelting incidents were reported from Gojwara, Soura, Narbal crossing in Srinagar, Barsu in Ganderbal and Trehgam in Kupwara. “The deployments exercised maximum restraint. Ten persons including 08 police and security personnel sustained injuries,” the statement said.(Agencies)
