Divisional Commissioner, Dr Asgar Samoon on Saturday directed the concerned officials to ensure that passenger vehicles stop only at designated bus stops to ease out traffic jams in the summer capital. 

Dr Samoon said this after inaugurating a passenger shelter built by Delhi Public School Srinagar at Fire Service Headquarters, Batamaloo. 

The shelter has been built by the DPS under its School Social Responsibility programme. “This is a good beginning. People should make use of this facility for their convenience,” Dr Samoon said on the occasion.  

“The concerned officials should ensure that passenger vehicles stop only at designated bus stops to ease out traffic jams,” he said. Later the Divisional Commissioner took a ride in passenger bus  alongwith Deputy Commissioner Srinagar and SSP Traffic to Jahangir Chowk.

“The shelter is part of an initiative taken by Delhi Public School Srinagar to built public convenience infrastructure.  15 passenger shelters alongwith 15 toilets are being built by the school in first phase for public convenience. A survey has already been undertaken by the school in collaboration with Traffic Police Srinagar, Srinagar Municipal Corporation, R&B & District Development officials to identity bus stops in and around city which will be developed into bus shelters for public convenience,” the DPS school management said in a statement. 

“The design of these bus shelters is at par with shelters seen in various European countries. Proper seating arrangement has been made for the comfort of passengers waiting for buses.

“We have designed the bus shelter keeping the harsh weather of our valley in mind. The design looks elegant with proper side shields to protect from harsh weather”, said Vijay Dhar, Chairman DPS Srinagar.

All the routes that this bus stop caters to, have been listed on the front sign board of this shelter. “Traffic police department has made a detailed route plan of the city with inputs from transport operators.  Our endeavor is to make keep these routes listed at every bus stop for the convenience of passengers waiting at these stops”, said Ehsan Quddusi, who is coordinating this initiative.
