Srinagar: Peoples Democratic Party senior leader and former Youth Secretary General Showkat Gayoor has been nominated as the member of the Executive Council of Islamic University of Science and Technology, Awantipora, by the government.

As per an order of the university, Chief Minister, who is also the Chancellor of IUST, has nominated Showkat Gayoor, Mrs Altaf Sarwar, Nazir Ahmad as members of the council.

Son of the prominent scholar, educationist, writer, and prominent political and social leader late Ghulam Rasool Gayoor Andrabi, Showkat has worked at grassroots level in the party in the state, and particularly in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district.

An engineering graduate, who preferred politics over government job after the killing of his father in 2005, Showkat joined National Conference in 2005 and was appointed its District President for three years.

He joined PDP in 2008 and was elevated as its state Youth General Secretary from 2008 to 2014.

Senior leaders in the PDP told KNS that Showkat has played a prominent role during the parliament and assembly elections in 2008, 2009 and 2014. “Since he has considerable foothold in the Pulwama constituency, he played a vital role in consolidating votes for the party’s win in elections,” a senior leader of the party told KNS.
