Hurriyat (G) chairman Syed Ali Geelani on Friday repeated his call for boycott of Anantnag by-polls being held on June 22.

Appealing the people of the constituency to stay away from polling stations, Geelani said that participating in these polls was “lengthening our journey to freedom”.

“Hurriyat Chairman appealed the people of Islamabad (Anantnag) not to participate in this military operation in any way and show your respect for the blood of the martyrs. He said that whoever votes commits an act of treason and his actions harm the sacred cause of the martyrs,” a statement quoted Geelani as saying.

He said that the Indian Supreme Court has formally passed a ruling that boycotting elections and campaigning for the same is a democratic right of every citizen and it has no legal trouble.

“Jammu & Kashmir is however a different world where the principles and rulings of this world does not apply and the elections which are held here are not more than a joke,” he added.

Geelani said that “election dramas” in Jammu & Kashmir have no bearing on the disputed nature and status of Kashmir. “… but it definitely lengthens our journey to freedom and it hides the grave human rights violations in Kashmir at the hands of the Indian armed forces.”
