bovineUdhampur: Notwithstanding the Supreme Court stay over the beef ban directions in Jammu and Kashmir, the state police arrested four persons allegedly attempting to smuggle the bovine animals in Udhampur district to Kashmir on Tuesday.

Police sources said that the accused were detained over the specific information about the smuggling of bovine animals in a truck and check point was set up at Chempari late last evening.

“As soon the truck was stopped, the driver attempted to flee the post. However, we chased him and caught after few hundred metres of distance,” sources said.

“Four bovine animals were rescued from truck and driver was arrested,” he added. The case has been lodged under relevant sections against them and investigation is underway.

Police identified accused as Anwar, Mohammad Aslam, Zakir Hussain and Abdul Gani. Interestingly, the development takes place barely a day after Apex court stayed over the High Court verdict in which they imposed the ban on beef consumption in state.

In a Muslim majority state, the High Court direction has triggered the massive anger among the general masses. The ruling coalition of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and BJP has also been cornered by the opposition National Conference and other small parties after speaker disallowed the bill for its discussion in Assembly.  For two days the proceedings remained disrupted by the opposition and government heaved relief temporarily on Monday after Supreme Court stayed the order for two months.
