Sopore: Stray dogs continue to haunt the citizens of Apple town Sopore as authorities have failed to take steps to curb the menace and from past few years the population of dogs is increasing alarmingly.
In old town areas of the Sopore, most of the time parents don’t allow their children to go for morning walk due to the threat of dogs while old men carry sticks for their safety.
Tanveer Nisar, a resident of Rahim Sahab area in Old town Sopore said that he don’t let his children to venture out in his absence due to constant threat of canines in their locality.
“Our children are not safe due to persistent threat of canines. These dogs barking at night not only disturbs our sleep but also triggers panic among the children,” he said.
“I am appealing authorities to act against the menace in the larger interests of people.”
“I keep a stick with me to beat the dogs away while bringing milk in morning from a nearby shop or to go for Fajr prayer,” says Sheikh Shafqat, one of the residents.
Local’s of New Colony said, It is very difficult for school going children, women and elderly people to move or walk on the roads and streets especially in the morning and late hours in the evening for fear of dogs. They said the Municipal Committee Sopore is unfazed with this brewing issue.
According to residents, the authorities have failed to initiate any concrete efforts to control the problem, despite many complaints.
In view of growing concerns, the BMO Sopore Dr.Sami, warned that stray dogs are dangerous as they can cause serious diseases and disorders among humans. He said they have injections free of cost available for rabies.
While speaking to one of the official’s of MC Sopore regarding the issue he admitted that it is doubtlessly a grave problem and the department is aware regarding the increase in their population.
He however, showed helplessness in acting against the menace due to apex court ruling.
The official said the only solution could be to have the dumping sites for wastage at isolated and faraway places.
