To provide all weather connectivity between Kashmir valley and Ladakh province, cabinet today gave approval to a strategic Zojila pass tunnel. The tunnel will make it possible to provide all weather connectivity to Ladakh province that remains cut-off from rest of the state due to the heavy snowfall in winters.

Zojila pass is situated on Srinagar- Leh highway at an altitude of 11,578 feet, therefore in winters (December to April) due to heavy snowfall and avalanches makes the movement of vehicles grave impossible. The cabinet gave approval to the Zojila Tunnel Project after Prime Minister Narender Modi chaired the meeting.

The decision was taken at a high-level meeting chaired by minister for road and transport Nitin Gadkari, after the question raised by Congress leader Digvijay Singh for violating the guidelines for awarding the contract, however the ministry has denied the charges.
