BJP Needs Some Saner Voices

Matter Of Survival
The Great Game
Elusive Consensus On GST

For the first time two senior Peoples Democratic Party ministers threatened to quit the alliance with the Bhartiya Janta Party, in case the investigation process in the murder and killing of eight year old girl at Kathua Jammu is being compromised. Ashifa, 8, a nomad girl was first abducted, then raped and later killed at Kathua. The Police has already arrested the main culprit and his accomplices and almost solved the case and found involvement of Special Police Officer in the rape and murder of the young girl.

The gruesome killing has been condemned at every level by the members of society; however, after crime branch revealed the names of culprits, a fresh controversy erupted in winter capital. Hindu Ektha Manch – an organization was formed to defend the culprits and now the organization that is strongly backed by the BJP leaders in Jammu have not only demanded the CBI probe but also raised fingers on the police investigations.

After the botched up investigations initially, the case was handed over to crime branch and the police solved the case by arresting the culprits. The head of the J&K’s Crime Branch even revealed that they got all the details about the crime and it was committed with an ‘ulterior motto’ to teach a particular community a lesson.

However, Hindu Ekta Manch in defense of the accused perpetrators of the crime organized the one day strike in Kathua on Saturday and held protest demonstrations in support of the accused who were involved in the most heinous crime. Few days ago, two BJP ministers in the coalition government who hail from the same area participated in a rally organized in defense of the accused.

The BJP ministers even blamed the J&K police and termed them for enforcing the jungle raj in the state. It is the same police force that is defending the ministers and their families; however, for political mileage the ministers are now trying to undermine this force. Earlier, one of the senior most state leader and minister in PMO, Jitendra Singh who is also representing Udhampur – Kathua constituency in the Lok Sabha demanded CBI probe and raised objections on the police investigations.

The statement from PMO is unfortunate especially for the J&K police that has been on the forefront of tackling militancy in the state and given many sacrifices. These statements have all the potential to give communal color to this investigation and undermine the role of state police that comprised capable officers who are known for the policing and investigations. Also there are many IPS officers who are part of the J&K police and by raising demand about the CBI investigation; it is also that the politicians are raising questions over the role of IPS officers. Also, large section of people in the state have no faith on the CBI and handing this case to the CBI will further complicate the situation.

The J&K is already a volatile state and a single incident of mishandling could trigger series of events that could even threaten the government. So this issue should left to the police and courts to decide and J&K chief minister Mehbooba Mufti being the Home Minister of the state should be given a free hand, otherwise, this issue is sufficient to bring down the coalition government and will prove that thinking of former J&K chief minister and PDP founder, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed that north pole could meet the south was a wrong theory and prove his detractors correct who had warned the PDP for joining hands with the BJP. Time has come when saner voices within the BJP should also stand up and defend the J&K chief minister and seek justice for eight year old girl who was brutally raped and murdered.
