Authorities Foil UN March, Impose Strict Curfew In Valley

Strict curfew was imposed in valley  on the 40 consecutive day today as authorities Wednesday foiled the UN march called by separatists’ leaders by arresting Hurriyat (G) chairman, Syed Ali Geelani and Hurriyat (M) chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq outside their residences when the duo attempted to move toward the UN Military Observers Group in Indian and Pakistan here at Sonawar.
Security forces including CRPF and JK police were deployed in strength on the roads that lead to the UN Office here, with roads and other streets sealed with concertina and razor wires.
Strict curfew was imposed in major towns across the valley to disallow people to march toward Srinagar.
People at several places staged sit-in when the forces stopped them from marching ahead.
The joint resistance leadership including Geelani, Mirwaiz and JKLF Chief Yasin Malik had appealed people to stage sit-ins on roads if they were stopped from marching towards the UN Office.
The leadership had appealed people to march towards UN office “to impress upon the global body to intervene and resolve” the Kashmir issue.
Chairman Hurriyat (M) Mirwaiz Umar Farooq was detained outside his Nigeen residence as soon as he tried to march towards the UN office in Sonwar, a Hurriyat spokesman said in a statement
“Hurriyat Chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq was arrested as the government forces on Wednesday foiled a march to the UN office in Srinagar called by the separatist leadership,” the statement said.
Mirwaiz was detained outside his Nigeen residence as soon as he tried to march towards the UN office in Sonwar.
Earlier, Hurriyat (G) chairman, Geelani was arrested outside his residence here at Hyderpora when he attempted to march towards UN office.
Protests sit-in were held at several places during the day. A protest march was held at Magarmal Bagh at 5.10 today afternoon, with protesters shouting pro-freedom slogans. Earlier, a sit-in was held at Nawa Kadal area of Srinagar. No major clash was reported from any part of the Valley when this report as filed in the afternoon.Meanwhile, curfew continued to paralyse life in the Valley, with schools, shops, business units closed down for over a month now, and mobile telephony and internet been shut for a month. Only BSNL post paid connections are working in the Valley and Broadband in Bemina and Lalchowk Exchanges only have been kept functional.
A complete shutdown is being observed today in entire Kishtwar district against the unabated civilian killings in Kashmir. The call for shutdown was given last night by Imam Jamia Masjid Kishtwar Farooq Ahmed Kichloo.
The call for shutdown according to Majlis-e-Shoora was forwarded to express solidarity with the people of Kashmir region in view of civilian killings.
Atleast 65 civilians have been killed in the protests that erupted after the killing of Wani, and over 6000 civilians have been injured.
Two cops were killed, while several forces men have also been injured in the clashes that have erupted in the Kashmir Valley.
