Srinagar: Amid ongoing unrest in Kashmir, Army today said it has started organizing day and night cricket tournaments in south Kashmir-the worst affected region of the prevailing crisis.

In a statement issued here, army said at a time when the Indian Cricket team is fighting its duel with the visiting New Zealand team, the youth of South Kashmir too were engaged in showcasing their cricketing prowess in a T-12 Day and Night Cricket Tournament in Panzgom, Pulwama.

“The efforts of the Army in organizing this fortnight long tennis ball tournament and enthusiastic participation by eight local teams deserve worthy credit especially in these times of turmoil and are a clear index of slowly but surely returning normalcy,” it said.

Army added the tournament, which started on 08 Oct 2016 and was played on a league basis, had youths from Pulwama, Shopian, Panzgom and nearly villages and drew large crowds to witness the matches most of which had nail biting finishes.

“The final was fittingly exciting too with Pulwama Tigers yesterday emerging victorious over the ‘Shopian Daredevils’ to lift the trophy. Such events being organised by the Govt agencies and receiving whole hearted response are a manifestation of popular aspirations for peace and calm to prevail so that all the people could return to their normal lives,” said army.
